Accessibility statement for this website

This website is run by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), an executive agency of the Department for Education (DfE).

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some content is provided as downloadable PDFs which may not be read out correctly by a screen reader
  • The “Accept cookies” dialog box may cause problems for screen reader and keyboard-only users
  • Some colours used for text may be hard to read for users with low vision
  • Embedded videos do not have full transcripts and may also cause some navigation problems for users without a mouse
  • Some input fields may have confusing labelling and their error messages may be difficult for screen reader users to understand

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Department for Education is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The PDF documents are not tagged or structured in a way that makes them easily readable by screen reader users (1.3.1 Info and Relationships, 1.1.1 Non-text content, 1.3.2 Meaningful sequence)

The “Accept cookies” modal allows non-mouse users to access the contents of the page behind, and the controls are not focusable in the expected order. Some controls are not reachable with keyboard at all. (2.4.3 Focus order, 2.1.1 Keyboard)

Some text content on the site does not meet the minimum contrast threshold so may be hard to read for users with low vision. (1.4.3 Contrast (minimum)

There are some embedded videos where information such as speaker names is only provided visually and is not accessible to non-sighted users. Video transcripts are also not yet available. (1.2.3 Audio description or text alternative)

Embedded videos each create 37 additional hidden tab stops for keyboard-only users, who may find it difficult to navigate to the next video once they have started playing one. (2.4.3 Focus order)

Some text content does not have its heading structure coded programmatically, with some non-heading text formatted as a heading, and vice versa. (1.3.1 Info and relationships)

Groups of radio buttons are not always coded in a way that makes the labelling clear, so screen reader users may find these difficult to use (1.3.1 Info and relationships)

Disproportionate burden

We have determined that there is no disproportionate burden to meet all the requirements.
